Did you have a good experience at Barking Rocks Winery? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
Barking Rocks Winery is a beautiful venue where you can sample the delicious local wines on Saturdays from 1:00-5:00 pm (or by appointment). The owner and staff are very knowledgeable about wines, and extremely sensitive and accommodating to individuals with disabilities. The venue is an old barn with lovely outside grounds, made to be as accommodating as possible within the framework with which they have to work. The Barking Rocks Winery is a small business working within a budget in an older building, and therefore required by law to make “reasonable” changes to make the venue accessible, but not required to adhere specifically to ADA rules until renovations take place.
That being said, nearby parking (not labeled accessible, but conveniently located), no steps, open areas inside, and a concrete sidewalk with a wide entrance work together to create an accommodating environment. One possible barrier to access is the rock walkway between the parking lot and the concrete sidewalk which is not smooth and therefore may be an issue for those using wheelchairs and walkers. However, the owner told me that in 15 years he has not had anyone unable to access the venue, and that takes into account the buses that bring groups of people with disabilities for outings to the winery. If you anticipate a problem, you can avoid the rock path by driving around the building to drop off at the front entrance – or ask a staff member to drive you from the parking lot to the entrance, which they are happy to do. The restrooms are a good size (one toilet, no stalls) with no steps, however do not have grab bars in place.
Call ahead to let the staff know you are coming and what accommodations you might need – they want everyone to be able to comfortably enjoy their winery where there tagline is “Making wine, friends and events happen”!
